South Rim Fire update: 15-20 acres. 32 firefighters will be on scene by early afternoon. Today's forecast is warm, windy and low humidity, but winds are blowing in a favorable direction to reduce fire spread.

More firefighters are on their way up to the South Rim this morning. Park staff are prepping the mules to assist in carrying water and gear up the steep trails. NPS reminds visitors that the Chisos backcountry trails remain closed at this time.

The Big Bend is home to a type of tick that requires multiple hosts to complete its life cycle.

In year one, it parasitizes small rodents. It moves on to a ground squirrel or rabbit in year two. Next, it needs the blood of large ungulates—or a human.
