The Big Bend is home to a type of tick that requires multiple hosts to complete its life cycle.

In year one, it parasitizes small rodents. It moves on to a ground squirrel or rabbit in year two. Next, it needs the blood of large ungulates—or a human.

All park roads in Big Bend National Park are impassable this morning, according to @BigBendNPS.

The 800,000-acre park received between 12-24 inches of snow last night, and it's continuing to fall. Officials are telling visitors to not attempt entering the park. #txwx

This morning, around 100 people are waiting for road conditions to clear so they can get on the roads to Presidio and Alpine. #txwx

Highways 67 and 90 were closed Wednesday night as a winter storm intensified, leaving roads icy and covered in snow. https://marfapublicradio.org/blog/west-texas-winter-storm-updates/

Since the pandemic began, monthly visitation to @BigBendNPS has reached all-time lows—zero in April, May and July when the park closed to the public—but has also seen record highs, 51,231 visitors in October and 62,515 in November.
